What to expect with Birth Doula Support
-
I support your decisions as you know your body better than anyone else does. I support ALL kinds of births. Every birth is different and that’s what makes it beautiful.
-
I get it, inviting a total stranger into the most vulnerable & sacred experience of your life may feel a little weird at first. Let me assure you that throughout your pregnancy we get to know each other by having at least 2 prenatal visits where I learn about your family, how you vision your birth, your preferences on how you plan to welcome your little one, your likes/dislikes & more.
-
If you are planning a hospital birth, there is a good chance you aren’t going to know the nurses or doctor(s) attending. Having a doula provides some reassurance that you will recognize one more face alongside your partner to whom you are comfortable voicing your needs. I work for you, so my best interests are always in your favour & I always go into a birth room with the question, “How will they remember this?” in the forefront of my mind.
-
From the texts & calls in the wee hours of the morning as early labour begins to the first few hours after your baby is born, I provide support with hands-on pain management and comfort measures such as breathing techniques, positioning, acupressure & massage work. As well as keeping you relaxed with affirmations, meditations & holding space with a calm presence.
-
You can think of me as another tool in your bag, I take the pressure off your need to remember all the nitty gritty, so you can be more at peace with enjoying your birth & connecting with yourself, baby & partner. Overall, I follow your lead. Often you will find your unique rhythm during your labour. If you are feeling like you need extra guidance or things get intense then I am there to help keep you grounded. I will help create a safe, calming & relaxing environment for your birth, and while at the same time providing continuous support I will try to get you & your partner set up for some quiet moments.
-
You are so strong, and you may be hours, days, or months from truly realizing your strength, but I already see it. I believe in your ability to birth your baby & will be your biggest cheerleader to manifest the birth you are dreaming of. In our prenatal visits, I provide evidence-based education to help you feel safe and will do my best to empower your decisions during your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
-
There are going to be a lot of questions about your baby, and a lot of people who will want to hold, snuggle & awe over them. My philosophy is to hold the mother, not the baby - unless otherwise asked. I am very invested in the art of nourishing the new mother & the changes that occur during the fourth trimester. Your body will endure sensations it hasn’t, and you may even experience new emotions. You are not alone & I am here for reassurance. Whether that be holding a heating pad on your back, massaging your feet after an epidural, or debriefing your birth experience and listening with empathy.
-
I am not here to replace you. You can consider me your birth wingman. I know birth and you know your partner. Together as a team, we are then able to provide the best support possible.
I want to ensure you can be as fully present for the birth of your new baby as possible. Whether that looks like showing you some nifty pain management massage tips, taking some photos while you slow dance with your birthing person, or staying with them while you rest to avoid burnout. Doulas also help partners by doing a lot of the small tasks (i.e. getting water, reheating the magic bag, getting snacks, etc.) so you don’t have to feel like you have to miss anything.
-
During pregnancy we discuss the vision you have for your birth & I learn your birth preferences. I hear you & will also help make sure your needs are being heard by those surrounding you. Although I will never speak for or above you, something you may hear me say to you & your partner is, “Would you like some time to think about this decision?” This comes back to helping you talk over your options & holding space for you to make informed and empowered decisions.
